With ASPS’s statistics indicating that rhinoplasty was the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the USA last year, Dr Jayson Oates (FRACS, ENT) medical director of Academy Face & Body and CALIBRE Clinic in Perth tells us his experience using the Le Med Nasal Splint with his rhinoplasty surgery patients.
For which indications, or after which procedures, do you use the Le Med Nasal Splint?
I provide the Le Med splint to all of my surgical rhinoplasty patients since I started to use it in early 2021.
What do you see as the advantages of the Le Med Nasal Splint over conventional splints?
I take my operative splint off after one week but know some surgeons leave them on for up to 2 weeks. But as soon as I take the original splint off the nose starts to swell. I think the Le Med splint does help reduce that swelling.
Do your patients prefer the Le Med Nasal Splint to a conventional splint?
They prefer the Le Med to the splint placed at the end of the operation. They can take it off during the day. They can adjust the position of it on the nose and how tight it feels, so they can minimise their discomfort while wearing it.
How would you rate the ease of use of the splint for you and for patients?
My nurses can explain how to use it in a minute or so and patients find it easy to use too.
The one downside is that the sticky patches stop ‘sticking’ after a while, but generally patients find it still holds on the nose overnight.
Is there anything further you would like to add?
For a long time I have noticed during the recovery period from surgical rhinoplasty how during the day the swelling goes down. Then at night, with the head down, the nose then swells up again. That is where the Le Med Splint is of most benefit – as it is easier for the patient to comply with overnight wearing requirements, they don’t get the increase in swelling at night, so then the nose stays smaller during the day.
